Governor Newsom’s Stay at Home Orders To Reduce COVID Hospitalizations
New stay at home orders hit most of California recently, as we have experienced a surge in the Intensive Care Unit due to COVID-19 related cases. On Thursday, 3rd December, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California would have to be put under the toughest set of restrictions since the beginning of the pandemic.
Gov. Newsom made a move to try to slow down the spread of the coronavirus in the state. California has seen record-breaking cases and hospitalization in recent times. In the last 14 days, there has been a spike of hospitalization and ICU admission by 86% and 67%.
According to abc7, 8,831 people have been hospitalized with the virus, and a record of 2066 patients have been admitted to the state’s ICU.
The stay-at-home orders will kick off when the ICU carrying capacity drops below 15%, and residents of the states will have to stay home and come outside for essential activities alone. These restrictions will remain in place for about three weeks until the region’s ICU capacity exceeds 15%
The restrictions will cause in-person dining, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, indoor/outdoor playgrounds, hair/barbing salons, museums, zoos, and aquariums to be shut down.
Although food takeouts will be allowed in restaurants, places of worship can only have their meetings outdoors. Professional sports centers can operate, but without live audiences, malls and shops can open but with 20% capacity and no dining inside. And hotels and offices that support critical infrastructure can open too.
Also, Schools won’t be affected, but travels will be temporarily restricted.
In his Thursday’s statement, Gov. Gavin Newsom said: “The effects of Thanksgiving have not yet been felt,” said Governor Newsom. “Dr. Fauci, I think, said it best. He says we should anticipate “a surge on top of a surge.'”
“We are at a tipping point in our fight against the virus, and we need to take decisive action now to prevent California’s hospital system from being overwhelmed in the coming weeks,” said Governor Newsom. “By invoking a Stay at Home Order for regions where ICU capacity falls below 15 percent, we can flatten the curve as we’ve done before and reduce stress on our health care system. I’m clear-eyed that this is hard on all of us — especially our small businesses who are struggling to get by. That’s why we leaned in to help our small business owners with new grants and tax relief to help us get through this month. If we stay home as much as possible and wear masks when we have to go to the doctor, shop for groceries, or go for a hike, California can come out of this in a way that saves lives and puts us on a path toward economic recovery.”
“If we don’t act now, our hospital system will be overwhelmed,” And to try to end his statement on a somewhat optimistic note; he said: “Help is on the way.”
