New COVID-19 Variant in Southern California
On Wednesday, the 30th of December, Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed the first case of the more contagious COVID-19 variant in southern California, which is now the second discovery in the United States. With the first being in Colorado.
According to sources, the infected person in California is a San Diego man about 30 years old. The infected man had no travel history recently.
Health officials say this new strain is 70% more contagious and deadly than the previous one. According to Governor Newsom’s statement last week, he said, “We haven’t seen anything as it relates to this strain yet. No evidence yet,”
In an interview with Washington Post on Tuesday, Anthony Fauci said, “I think we have to keep an eye on it, and we have to take it seriously,” he said. “We obviously take any kind of mutation that might have a functional significance seriously. But I don’t think we know enough about it to make any definitive statements, except to follow it carefully and study it carefully.”
He explained further that viruses evolve naturally through a population, which, according to him, is one of the reasons why it’s necessary to get a fresh new flu shot yearly.
In the past week, California has experienced some of the worst COVID-19 cases in the country, and this new strain present is another cause for headache for the Governor and the residents of the state.
